Rain can’t stop Wonder Barbados Hockey Tournament

THE Wonder Barbados Road Hockey Tournament 2016 continues despite some rain-affected games. With four to five games playing each evening, rescheduled games have been slated to play in the first matchup of the next slated playing date.

At the Market Hill courts, Game #1, which was postponed from Belfield, featured Legends against CM Catering Zionites. Legends went down big 5-2 after being only down by one goal at half-time 2-1. Legends actually got on the scoreboard first with Curwen Brewster being the culprit at Belfield. Damien Downes then hit two for Zionites before rain prematurely ended the game. At Market Hill, Zionites scored three goals past the Legends, one by Mario Moore and a brace by Paul Gill before Brewster scored his second of the game to try to ease the margin of defeat.

Game #9 was the next matchup between Saltfish and HE’s Construction Services. Saltfish blanked their opponents 4 -0 with Ron Phillips opening the scoring and then Dexter Clarke sent home two before Shavon Goddard finished the first half with one of his own. Though more goals seemed sure, there were no goals in the second half.

Eagles versus ROGCOL Royals was the next game on the courts and it was a goal fest. Royals went up 2-0 with two goals by Ayana Wilson, but Shaquille Callender answered with two of his own to tie the game at 2-2. Just before the half-time whistle, Kevin Belle and Jada Prescod doubled the Royals lead with two more to send them into the half up 4-2. Eagles drew a goal back at the start of the second half by O’neal Holder, but Wilson completed a hat trick to seal the deal for Royals in an exciting matchup 5-3.

Strike Force came up against Spirit in the penultimate game of the night and the two teams played well to try to achieve the win. Strike Force struck first with a goal by Akeem Rudder and went into the half-time break with the one-goal advantage. Spirit drew level 1-1 with a goal by Matthew Williams to start the half, but Rudder was not finished and he scored his brace to restore Strike Force’s one-goal lead. Spirit would have the final say, however, from the stick of Kris Holder with the end of the game drawing nigh and the battle ended in the only draw of the night.

Legends vs Simplex Trading Vikings was slated to be the last game of the night, but was postponed due to rain. October 30 is the next date for games in the tournament and the first slot will feature the rained-out game at 5:45 p.m. on the Newbury courts. (AS)
