City of Bridgetown/St. Michael South into semis

The final four are set in stone for the title chase of the 2016 David Thompson Memorial Constituency Councils Football Classic.

With the last of the quarter-final games being played on Monday night at Passage Road, St. Michael South and City of Bridgetown booked berths in the penultimate round of this year’s competition.

St. Michael South were first to secure their spot by beating St. Thomas. The two teams fought tooth and nail to the end, but St. Thomas drew first blood. Shaquille Stewart carried his team on his back all season and broke the ice in the ninth minute to put them ahead. The inequality was short-lived and St. Michael South were level again the very next minute as Omari Leacock netted in the 10th.

St. Thomas, determined to make it to the final again after doing just that in the inaugural year of the tournament, went into the break with a lead as Stewart beat the custodian a second time in the 42nd minute. However, St. Michael South had more in the tank and equalised in the 59th through the efforts of Weymouth Wales player Tristan Parris. ‘Fishy’ was not done there as he knocked home the game-winner in the 88th minute to shut things down.

Things were a bit tighter for City of Bridgetown as it came down to penalty kick after breaking even with St. Andrew at the end of extra time. There were no goals inside of regulation time and therefore, time was added. Robert Charles rocked the nets first for City of Bridgetown when he converted a penalty in the 112th minute. St. Andrew refused to lie down and had a reply eight minutes later through the talents of Jomo Harewood. With things locked at the end of both halves, the game went to the penalty spot. Charles, Carl Joseph, Rohan Hewitt and Don Ifill all scored for City of Bridgetown to see them with four goals from the spot. St. Andrew only mustered two with Harewood and Javon Taylor converting.

The semi-finals are slated to be played on Sunday December 4 at Gall Hill. St. Michael South are scheduled to take on St. George South at 5:30 p.m., while defending champions, Christ Church East-Central go up against City of Bridgetown in the nightcap at 7:30 p.m.
