SJPP Head: partnerships with business community key
11/6/2009
ACTING Principal of the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic (SJPP), Anthony Head-ley, says the institution is proud to provide the Barbadian workforce with craftsmen for the advancement of society, and as such, will be forging ahead in building more successful partnerships, with the local business community.
His comments came recently as the institution celebrated its 40th Anniversary. At present, the SJPP is the premier tertiary level Technical and Vocational Education and Training institution on the island, with an enrolment of around 3 000 students. The SJPP attracts a significant number of male students, which compensates for the disproportionate
numbers of female students at other tertiary level institutions, such as the Barbados Community College and the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus.
Over the 40 year period, the SJPP has built partnerships with the local business community, especially with businesses in the private sector, which sees students being granted a short period of on the job training, prior to completion of their training and graduation. The institution also offers customised training for the public and private sectors, to enhance the performance of staff and to upgrade their skills.
Headley has noted that an SJPP trained student is the preferred choice for many an employer in Barbados and as such, the institution values the relationship it has built and now enjoys with many businesses in various industries. As such, the institution will be seeking to recognise a number of businesses who have aided the institution over the years, in reaching its targets and objectives.
Chairman of the Board of Management, Harcourt Husbands, also endorsed Headley’s comments and recently he presented Certificates of Apprecia-tion to the SJPP’s “Partners in Industry” which included businesses and organisations such as the Men’s Educational Support Association (MESA), Simpson Motors, Phillips Freighting and Farming, the Central Bank of Barbados and Steve Building Works amongst others. Addition-al businesses will be recognised in the future. (RSM) |
