Stay focused!

Graduands told to stick to task at hand

Set yourself a goal and ensure that you stick to it.

This advice came from Dr. Kenroy Burke as he delivered the feature address at the PBHC School of Holistic Therapies Inc.’s graduation ceremony and ten-year anniversary on Saturday night at Almond Bay Caterers, Christ Church.

Praising the 2016 graduating class for what they have accomplished thus far, he stated that while he is sure they would have had distractions along the way, they stuck to their studies and now they can reap the benefits.

“‘Stick-to-itiveness’ speaks of focus. In a business like this distractions would come. Whenever you are studying, distractions would come. I am sure that there were lots of distractions. I am sure that when you went through the period of Crop Over, there were lots of distractions. When you went through certain times and seasons, there were distractions – distractions are everywhere. But we have to be very careful as people who are very serious about what we do, that we don’t lose sight when distractions come by.”

He urged them to continue to adopt this same self-discipline as they now embark on their chosen careers because if they do not, then they would find it very difficult to move forward.

“One thing that I have learnt over the years of my existence is always keep your eye on the big picture. The big picture is what guides you … You increase your probability of failure when you see the distractions more than you see the big picture. Winston Churchill said that ‘You will never reach your destination if you stop and throw stones at every dog that barks’. You have to be very careful therefore as you move forward as entrepreneurs,” he warned.

Dr. Burke also advised graduands to ignore the negative persons around them that would try to convince their dreams are impossible.

“If you have not already started, you have to keep focused because there are many things that can jade you, many things that can cause you to get off course and we need to learn therefore what it means to ignore those things – ignore the naysayers, those persons who said to you that you couldn’t do it’; that promised you that you were going to fail; that told you that you were wasting precious time. You have to also ignore the dream killers,” and those are the persons who would find every reason to tell you why you cannot accomplish your goals, he said.
